Pearl River County Sheriff's Office warns public of scam using PRCSO name

On Monday, March 20, 2023, the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office (PRCSO) was contacted about a scam. This time the scammer contacted a Registered Sex Offender and advised them that they were out of compliance and owned money.


The scammer demanded that they pay a fine over the phone or a warrant would be issued for their arrest. The scammer gave instructions to the citizen to purchase a gift card. Once the citizen purchased the gift card, they gave the information to the scammer. The scammer obtained the money off the card.


The scammers are in some cases using the name of Shane Edgar, who is a commander with the PRCSO.


The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office does not make calls over the phone and solicit money. Please be aware of such scams and do NOT purchase gift cards or pay over the phone in any way. These scams are very sophisticated and complex and very difficult to solve.


The Sheriff’s Department also state It’s been brought to their attention that scammers are calling citizens and demanding money. The scammer is telling the citizen who answers the phone that they have warrants and need to pay them over the phone.


The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Office does not make calls over the phone and solicit money.
