POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Former Pearl River baseball standout Bryson Ware's (Madison; Germantown) big league dreams moved one step closer on Monday as he was selected with the 253rd pick in the Major League Baseball Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.
"We are extremely excited for Bryson and his family. It has been incredible watching Bryson's development over the past couple of years," Pearl River coach Michael Avalon said. "The first thing that comes to mind is well-deserved. He has worked extremely hard and believed in himself to accomplish this goal of professional baseball.
"Bryson checks all the boxes as a player and, more importantly, as a person. We are thankful he trusted in our program and used our program as a stepping stone along his journey. We look forward to following as he continues his journey to the big leagues."
Ware's tenure at Pearl River wasn't long due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he quickly made his mark on the program. In 16 games, Ware helped lead the Wildcats to a 12-4 record while batting .321 with five homers, three triples, three doubles and 17 RBIs. He walked nine times and stole four bags. He then signed to continue his baseball career at Auburn.
In his sophomore season at Auburn, Ware did it all for the Tigers making 25 starts in right field, 10 starts as designated hitter and two at first base. He finished the year with a .254 batting average, hitting six doubles and six homers.
As a junior, Ware featured in 49 games, holding a .234 batting average, a .336 on-base percentage and a .394 slugging percentage. He hit eight doubles, two triples and one homer, picking up 21 RBIs.
Ware continued to work hard and had a senior season for the record books in 2023. On the year, he collected a .350 batting average with 11 doubles, one triple and 63 RBIs. Ware belted 24 home runs which broke the single-season Auburn record. He helped lead the Tigers to an NCAA Regional appearance.
He was named a semifinalist for the NCBWA Dick Howser Trophy and was a member of the Golden Spikes Award midseason watch list. Ware reached base in the first 34 games of the 2023 season and tallied an 18-game hit streak.
