Local man sentenced to 30 years for murder of his cousin


Poplarville, MS- 15th Circuit Court District Attorney Hal Kittrell announced that on November 22, 2019, Malcolm Aquam Nixon, age 29, pled guilty in Pearl River County Circuit Court to Second Degree Murder and was sentenced by Judge Anthony Mozingo to serve 30 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Malcolm Nixon is responsible for the February 28, 2018, shooting death of Justin Tobias Nixon, his cousin, in Picayune.

The case was investigated by officers of the Picayune Police Department, including Criminal Investigation Division Commander Lt. Rhonda Johnson, the case detective and recent recipient of the Police Officer of the Year award.

Members of the victim’s family in attendance at the sentencing expressed appreciation to Lt. Johnson for her dedication to seeking justice for their loved one. Justin Nixon’s mother expressed her deep sense of loss, and a family spokesman expressed the deep impact of Justin’s death on his entire family, condemning the senseless violence that lead to his death.
