Pearl River’s Noah Mitchell lands NJCAA honor

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River’s leading tackler wrapped up another award Wednesday. Freshman linebacker Noah Mitchell (Leakesville; Greene County) was named the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week after his standout performance at No. 1 Gulf Coast last Thursday.

The honor is Mitchell’s third in as many days after he was named the Forrest Health Wildcat of the Week on Monday and the MACJC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

Mitchell was all over the field in the 25-3 loss to the Bulldogs and was a big reason PRCC held the No. 1 team in the country to just six points in the first half.

The freshman was credited with 23 total tackles, including 11 solo stops. He also recorded two tackles-for-loss, one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry.

Mitchell’s 23 tackles were not only a career high, but they’re also believed to be a single-game high, at least since 2015.

Mitchell already leads PRCC with 80 total tackles — also a program high, dating back to at least 2015. His 11.4 tackles-per-game average leads the MACJC and is third in the NJCAA.

TUNE IN Pearl River will close out the regular season Thursday with a 6 p.m. kickoff against Mississippi Delta at Dobie Holden Stadium. The game will be streamed at PRCCAthletics.com and PRCCMedia.com/gold with David Sutton calling the action.

The game will also be carried on WRJW 1320 AM in Picayune, WCJU 1450 AM in Columbia, WCJU 104.9 FM in Prentiss and both WHSY 950 AM and WHSY 105.9 FM in Hattiesburg.
