County to submit three projects for BP money grant program

The Pearl River County Board of Supervisors will submit three projects to the Mississippi Gulf Coast Restoration Grant program. During the supervisor’s Monday meeting, County Engineer Les Dungan presented three projects to the council for approval to submit.

The board approved resolutions on the proposed projects as follows:

  1. A 14,000 square foot aviation training facility at the Poplarville airport on Highway 53

  2. Property (land) to build an industrial site in the county.

  3. The extension the northern portion of Ridge Road to open up land for economic development, relieve some of the traffic problems around the area of Walmart and Home Depot on Memorial Blvd in Picayune, and provide better access to the Picayune airport.

All of the projects will require a 20 percent match of funding from the county for the total cost per project. Dungan said for the Ridge Road project, the county could use the re-purposing of its previous federal earmarked money and state aid money toward the 20 percent match.

District 3 Supervisor and board Vice President Hudson Holliday said that it is his understanding that the airport’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant money received annually could be applied to the aviation training facility as part of the match, and Dungan agreed with him.
