Region XXIII Champion Pearl River inks Wichita State transfer
POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The Region XXIII Champion Pearl River Wildcats have signed Wichita State transfer Rod Brown, head coach Chris Oney announced Tuesday.
“Rod adds experience that we’ll need heading into next year with the graduation of our forwards,” Oney said. “We expect Rod to be the anchor on the front line to hold our ship steady.”
The 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward is expected to do a lot in the front court for PRCC.
“He’s a kid with a lot of ability,” Oney said. “We’re going to try to use every aspect of his elite skillset.”

Brown was first introduced to Pearl River during his redshirt season in 2017-18, when he battled daily in practice with former Pearl River All-American Darral Willis. During that season, Brown added 15 pounds of muscle while focusing on the Shockers’ strength and conditioning program. As a redshirt freshman last season, Brown scored 41 points with 48 rebounds on a Shockers squad that made the semifinal round of the NIT.
Brown was considered a three-star recruit out of Cordova High in Tennessee as a member of WSU’s 2017 signing class. Brown ultimately signed with the Shockers over offers from Iowa State, Tennessee, Pitt, Arkansas, UAB and others.
In 2016, Brown helped Cordova High to a 30-4 record and a Tennessee AAA State Semifinals finish while landing on the all-tournament team. The next season, Brown averaged 21 points and 14 rebounds while leading the Cordova Wolves to a 24-8 mark and a regional title. His post-season play earned him MVP honors in both the district and region tournaments.
Brown joins a 2019 signing class that already includes Francis Marion transfer Kailex Stephens and East Carolina transfer Tae Hardy along with prep signees Earl Smith (Jackson; Lanier), Kolby Moore (Clinton), Dontae Jackson(Gulfport), Dontavious Proby (Biloxi), Jariyon Wilkens (Biloxi) and Jarron Wilkens (Biloxi).
