Picayune basketball teams advance to next round of Class 5-A playoffs
The Picayune Maroon Tide girls and boys basketball teams won their 1st Round Class 5A games at Kelly Wise Memorial Gymnasium on Monday and Tuesday night respectively.
On Monday, Picayune beat Long Beach 44-20. Camille Culpepper had 12 points and Deniya Freeman added 10 points. The Lady Maroon Tide will now play on Friday at the top-ranked and unbeaten West Jones Mustangs in Soso. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
Last night, the Maroon Tide boys held off a tough West Harrison team 51-44. Kobe Jones had 19 points (including 4 three pointers) and Marvun Arnold finished with 12 points. Jalen Hall (number 20 in the picture) scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Picayune (19-11).
Down the stretch, West Harrison took the lead 43-42 with under four minutes left in the game. Picayune rallied to go on a 9-1 run to finish the game.
During the run by the Maroon Tide, Sergio Williams, who finished with 5 points, hit a contested jump shot with just under a minute left to give Picayune a 49-44 lead. Arnold sank two free throws with :29 left to seal the win.
Picayune will play at Wayne County on Saturday at 7:00pm.
