Elections results for state and local races

Tuesday’s election produced some surprises both locally and statewide in Mississippi and sets up some very interesting runoff races in three weeks.

In the statewide senate races, Republican Roger Wicker won re-election by gaining over 58 percent of the vote in defeating Democratic challenger David Baria. In the special election, Cindy Hyde-Smith and Mike Espy will face off in a runoff in three weeks with the final totals statewide showing Hyde-Smith with 42 percent of the vote and Espy with 40 percent. Chris McDaniel finished third with 17 percent of the vote.

Incumbent Republican Steven Palazzo will return to the U.S. House of Representatives 4th District seat after defeating Democrat Jeramey Anderson. Palazzo won with over 69 percent of the vote.

In the Chancery Court District 10 Place 4, at this time it appears there will be a runoff between Vanessa Jones and Stacy Sims Barber. Jones leads with 31 percent of the vote while Barber is second with 19 percent of the vote. Chad Smith also had 19 percent of the vote but is currently in third place trailing Barber by 419 votes. There are a large number of absentee votes to be counted that could change the second place vote totals. In Pearl River County, Chad Smith received the most votes with 30.14 percent (3,642 votes). Barber had 3,265 votes in Pearl River County and Jones received 2,157.

In Chancery Court District 10 Place 3, Shelia Havard Smallwood received 59 percent of the vote to defeat Bob Marshall. In Pearl River County, Marshall had 56 percent of the vote with 6,270 votes to Smallwood’s 4,876.

Overall, 30.69 percent of registered voters cast votes in Pearl River County.

In the two races contested for the Pearl River County School Board, both incumbents trail at this time, but there are over 1,300 absentee votes to be counted that could change either of these two races depending on the number of the absentee ballots that are in Districts 1 and 2.

On the votes cast yesterday, in District 1 Christian Burge leads incumbent Rodney Dyess 406 votes to 313 votes. In District 2, Jerry Frazier leads with 478 votes to incumbent Jeremy Weir’s 430 votes. As mentioned, there are absentee votes that could change these outcomes.
