Lady Wildcats clinch playoff berth with convincing win

Pearl River's women's soccer team is headed back to the post-season after earning a 3-1 win at Meridian on Tuesday night.

The victory clinched the No. 3 seed in the MACJC's South Division for the Lady Wildcats (7-6-1, 4-2-1 MACJC South).

Two-time MACJC Player of the Week Rena Gordon (Clarendon, Jamaica) got the scoring started with three minutes remaining in the first half when she burried a cross from Sashine Smith (Kingston, Jamaica).

Pearl River's Sarah Havens — shown battling with an Itawamba player in the season opener — scored her first goal of the year Tuesday in PRCC's 3-1 win at Meridian. (BRETT RUSS/PRCC Athletics)

Skylar Spears (Clarkdale) extended PRCC's lead to 2-0 in the 68th minute, tapping in pass from Zigi Ahortor (Accra, Ghana). After Meridian got back within one goal, PRCC's Sarah Havens (Hurley; East Central) put the game away with a blast from about 25 yards out.

Mallorie Seal (Brooklyn; Forrest County AHS) earned the win, stopping all three shots she faced in 62 minutes. Abbi Thexton (Sumrall) turned away one of two shots she faced.

PRCC will close out the home portion of its schedule with a 5 p.m. tilt against Jones College before concluding the regular season next Monday at Itawamba.
