PRCC women can’t mount second half comeback

PERKINSTON— Skylar Spears (Clarkdale) netted her first collegiate goal but the Pearl River Community College Lady Wildcats soccer team couldn’t overcome a two-goal deficit Friday night, falling at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 3-1.

Gulf Coast’s Kelby Zendejas opened the scoring nine minutes in and later pushed the home team’s lead to 3-1 in the 39th minute.

Spears’ goal came in the 20thminute on a pass from Rena Gordon (Clarendon, Jamaica). Gordon found Spears alone in front of the goal and the PRCC striker struck true, blasting the shot past the Gulf Coast keeper.

The 1-1 tie was short lived as Gulf Coast (1-0) jumped back ahead 11 minutes later on a Chloe Fell goal.

PRCC played much better in the second half, limiting MGCCC’s chances while earning several of their own, but the visitors were unable to mount a comeback.

Abbi Thexton (Sumrall) played the first half in goal for PRCC, making one save. Mallorie Seal (Brooklyn; Forrest County AHS) made two saves in a perfect final 45 minutes.

PRCC (1-3) returns to the pitch Tuesday to host Southwest Mississippi Community College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
