Hornets beat Blue Devils; Maroon Tide loses at D'Iberville
Poplarville 50 Pearl River Central 14
The Poplarville Hornets built a 29-14 halftime lead and cruised to a 50-14 win over Pearl River Central at Kenneth L. Hendrix Stadium in Carriere on Friday.
Ahmad Bolton ran for a pair of touchdowns and Tyson Holston also scored two touchdowns (one receiving and a touchdown run). Senior Hornet quarterback Antonio Barnes also accounted for two TDs, passing for one and running for another touchdown.
PRC sophomore quarterback Cameron Brunson threw two touchdown passes for the Blue Devils; one to Kobe Whitehead and another to Damon Anderson.
Poplarville (1-1) will travel to play at Seminary on Friday while the Blue Devils (0-2) will travel to Brooklyn to play Forrest County AHS.
D'Iberville 49 Picayune 33
Despite rushing for over 530 yards against D’Iberville, the Picayune Maroon Tide lost 49-33 at Buddy Singleton Field / Warrior Stadium on Friday night.
Picayune and D’Iberville each scored on their first two possessions and a missed Maroon Tide extra point gave the Warriors a 14-13 lead. Picayune got their two touchdowns on a 1 yard quarterback sneak by Jakail Myers and a 2 yard run by fullback Kade Turnage.
D’Iberville scored their first two touchdowns on big plays. On their first play from scrimmage, Jaden Walley and Justin Walley hooked up on a 67 yard TD pass. The second score came on just the Warriors third offensive play, a 16 yard run by Marquis Whitley after Jaden Walley ran for 43 yards on the play before the TD.
The Warriors stretched their lead to 21-13 on a Jaden Walley 19 yard run with 7:45 left in the second quarter. Picayune responded on Jairice Travis 9 yard TD run and tied the game on a two point conversion on a run by Dylan Schaubhut with 4:13 left in the first half.
The Warriors returned the ensuing kickoff to the Picayune 18 yard line and Jaden Walley scored on the first snap from 18 yards to give D’Iberville a 28-21 lead.
In the third quarter, the Warriors scored on their first possession when Cory Hathorn caught a screen pass from Jaden Walley and zig zagged his way back and forth the field for a 68 yard touchdown. Picayune scored on their first possession of the second half as well on 26 yard run by Cameron Thomas, but the point after was wide right and D’Iberville lead 35-27.
The Warriors scored on a 4 yard run by Jaden Walley midway in the 4th quarter and got another TD run from Marquis Whitley (49 yards) to build a 49-27 lead with 5:54 left.
Picayune’s last score came on a 31 yard run by Schaubhut with 2:01 left.
Jortin Raine ran the ball 24 times for 238 yards. Travis added 88 yards on 13 carries.
Picayune (1-1) will play at Pascagoula on Friday.
