Mississippi Department of Education releases MAAP scores for English & Math

Last Thursday, the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) released the statewide results from the 2017-18 Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP). MAAP assesses student performance in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics in grades 3-8, English II and Algebra I.

The MAAP results showed the following overall results:

--40 districts had greater than 45 percent of all students scoring Level 4 or 5 in ELA, compared to 22 districts in 2017 and 14 in 201

---52 districts had greater than 45 percent of all students scoring Level 4 or 5 in mathematics, compared to 32 districts in 2017 and 15 in 2016

Four school districts on the Coast rank in the state's top ten for proficiency levels.

The state’s goal is for 70% proficiency by the year 2025. According to the numbers, overall the scores are below 50%. But 65% of Biloxi students were proficient in math, which is 5th in the state. Ocean Springs had 58% proficiency in English, which is 4th in the state. Long Beach ranked 9th in the state for English proficiency, and Pass Christian ranked 10th.

The percentage in the levels show the percentage of students who are proficient in that level. The levels are from lowest to highest. For example, Level 1 and Level 2 are considered low grading. Level 3 is considered average grading, and Level 4 and Level 5 are above average.
