Picayune holds off Poplarville 28-20
Picayune—The Picayune Maroon Tide jumped out to a 20-0 lead and held on for a 28-20 win over the Poplarville Hornets at Lee-Triplett Stadium.
The Maroon Tide got points on their first possession on a 25 yard field goal by Arnie Ramirez with 7:25 to go in the first quarter.
After holding the Hornets and forcing a punt, Picayune took over on their own 44 and scored 6 plays later on a 7 yard touchdown pass from Jakail Myers to Jaylen Hart. Ramirez’s point after made it 10-0 with 2:21 left in the quarter.

The Maroon Tide extended the lead to 17-0 on a 5 yard run by Dylan Schaubhut with 7:18 left in the second quarter.
Picayune got the ball back on a fumble recovery and settled for a 31 yard field goal from Ramirez with 2:03 left in the half for a 20-0 lead.
Poplarville got on the scoreboard with a 6 yard touchdown pass from Antonio Barnes to Chase Shears with :51 seconds left before half. Ethan Spiers’ point after made it 20-7.

The Hornets scored on the first possession of the second half on a 1 yard run by Amahd Bolton and Spiers' extra point made it 20-14 with 10:06 left in the third quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Poplarville forced Picayune to punt from the Maroon Tide 42. Punter Kade Turnage’s punt rolled inside the 5 yard line and a Hornet player touched the ball allowing Picayune to recover at the Poplarville 4 yard line. Three plays later, Myers scored on a 1 yard run . Picayune went for two points and Myers connected on a pass to Juvonta Raymond making it 28-14 with 3:58 to play.
Poplarville responded going 62 yards in 6 plays and scored on a Bolton 3 yard run with 2:20 left. A bad snap nullified a point after attempt.
Picayune was able to get a first down and run out the clock after the Hornets attempting an onside kick that was fielded clean by the Maroon Tide.
Jortin Raine ran for 135 yards on 27 carries to pace Picayune. Myers completed 4 of 7 passes for 85 yards.
Picayune will play at D’Iberville on Friday while Poplarville travels to Pearl River Central.
