Response to reckless driver leads to arrest

Picayune Police Department Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri said that on July 26, at 6:33am, a Picayune Patrol officer was dispatched to southbound lane of I-59 just south of Exit 4 in reference to a reckless driver in a white 2018 GMC truck.

When the officer arrived at the location, he observed a truck with a Louisiana license plate swerving within the lanes of the interstate, but crossing the yellow line multiple times. At this time, the officer conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle, approached the vehicle, and came in contact with the driver identified as Brandon Thomas Bishop, age 26, of 19233 South Trent Jones Drive, Baton Rouge, LA.

According to Magri, the officer observed Bishop to be nervous and his eyes appeared to be dilated. The officer asked Bishop to exit the vehicle in order to speak with him. He observed Bishop to be noticeably shaking and mumbling as he spoke. A second officer arrived on the scene and the officers attempted to conduct several field sobriety tests which Bishop could not complete. Bishop gave consent to the officers to search the vehicle.

During the search of the vehicle, officers located a gray glasses case from under the driver’s seat which contained a clear plastic baggie containing a crystal-like substance believed to be Crystal Methamphetamine, a clear plastic baggie containing an off-white substance believed to be Heroin, one plastic straw containing an off-white substance believed to be Heroin, one glass pipe commonly used to inhale a controlled substance, and another clear plastic straw commonly used to ingest or inhale a controlled substance.

At this point, Bishop was taken into custody and transported to the Criminal Justice Center. A more thorough search was performed on Bishop and the search revealed a large plastic baggie that was concealed in his rectum which contained a crystal-like substance believed to be Crystal Methamphetamine.

Magri said that Bishop was booked and incarcerated for two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and one count of Possession of Paraphernalia. Bishop was also cited for Reckless Driving.
