Local Student Awarded Toyota-Haley Barbour Scholarship
Ethan Wilson has been awarded a Toyota-Haley Barbour Scholarship and is one of only five students selected to receive this prestigious scholarship. Selections were based upon University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Foundation scholarship applications, a submitted essay, and previous academic achievements. The scholarship awards $32,000 over a four-year period ($8,000 per academic year).
In order to maintain this scholarship, students must remain a major in Science, Engineering, or Mathematics, be in good academic standing, continue making progress toward degree, and complete 30 hours per academic year.
Ethan, a recent graduate of Goss Road Homeschool and student of teacher/owner Shannon McCormick, maintained a 4.0 GPA and scored 31 on the ACT. He plans to study Computer Science at USM.
Ethan, the son of Damon and Denise Wilson of Picayune, worked as a part-time radio announcer since October of 2015 until last month when he began preparing to enroll at USM for the summer.
“Ethan is a perfect example of how one should conduct themselves. He takes care of his school work, which is evident with his GPA and ACT. He took the same approach while working here at WRJW and his co-workers regarded him as one of the best. While we will miss him working on our team, we are excited for him. USM made a very wise choice and a smart investment with this scholarship award," said Carey Meitzler, General Manager of WRJW, when he learned of Wilson’s being named a recipient of the scholarship.
