At Wednesday’s meeting of the Pearl River County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board handled an assortment of items including an award of a scholarship, moved forward in executing a county wide paving contract, and heard good news on continued housing growth in the county.
A’Niya Victoria John, a senior at Poplarville High School, was recognized as the 2018 recipient of the Mississippi Association of Supervisor County Employee Scholarship. The scholarship is for $500.00 and will be used by Ms. John to attend Pearl River Community College. Her mother Cindy has been an employee with the county for 18 years.

Johnson (holding certificate) with (from L-R) her brother, Board Vice President Hudson Holliday, and her mother
County Engineer Les Dungan recommended to the board for them to execute a contract with Huey P. Stockstill, LLC, for the County Wide Paving Project. This project is for the paving of approximately 13 miles of roads and includes work on Oak Hill Road, Henleyfield McNeill Road, Barth Road, North Hill Drive, North Hill Drive West, Clear Ridge, Field Brook Drive, Shore Crest Circle, Derby Whitesand Road, and Palestine Road. The total contract is valued at $854,782.40.
In a separate matter, Tax Assessor/Collector Gary Beech presented a request for an Ad Valorem Tax Exemption from Huey P. Stockstill, LLC, for operations at a new site at the end of Goodyear Blvd in Picayune that will employ nine employees with an annual payroll of $ 366,000. The board approved the request and it will be forwarded to the state of Mississippi Department of Revenue for review to validate the request meets the proper criteria for the exemption to be granted to the requestor.
The county continues to see solid economic growth as reflected in the Department of Planning and Development’s monthly report. The report showed that permit fees grew from $15,952 in March to $22,188 for April.

The board met with architects from Landry & Lewis in the afternoon portion of the meeting to do a final review of the plans for the new annex building.
During the review, it was discussed that the bids for the project could be published inviting responses in the next 30 days. The estimate for the completion of the building was stated to be between 12 to 15 months if the project is able to break ground in the next 60 to 90 days.
