Hattiesburg Clinic Breast Center Recognized as Center of Excellence

HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Breast Center at Hattiesburg Clinic is once again being recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

This distinguished acknowledgement, which the center has held in previous years, is awarded to facilities that have successfully received accreditation in the specialties of Mammography, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, Breast Ultrasound, Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy and Breast MRI. Accreditation must be earned for each of these specialties every three years.

The application process to become a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence is both time consuming and detail specific in areas ranging from equipment quality control to the patient receiving the exam results. This process requires the center to meet specific standards set by the American College of Radiology and is evaluated annually through the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA).

The Breast Center performs approximately 2,500 mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and breast MRI exams every month with 20 staff members and five breast radiologists. All of the center’s technologists are board certified and most of the technologists and radiologists have more than 25 years of experience each.

They also provide 3D mammography, known as breast tomosynthesis, which is a more sensitive exam of the breast, particularly in women with dense breasts. Additionally, The Breast Center offers bone densitometry that allows measurement of the patient’s bone density and determines the patient’s percentage of risk fracture.

“Being a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence distinguishes us as a facility that provides our patients with specialized and dedicated care,” said William A. Whitehead, MD, medical director for The Breast Center. “Our goal is to offer a private, relaxed, spa-like atmosphere for our patients while providing them with breast imaging that has met ACR standards.”
