Maroon Tide beats Poplarville 14-8 in season finale

Picayune defeated Poplarville 14-8 on Tuesday to finish their season with 12-12 record including wins over teams headed to the playoffs in their last three games.

Poplarville scored two runs in the first and second inning to lead 4-0. The Maroon Tide got two runs in the top of the third, but the Hornets put up another two runs to lead 6-2.

Luke Smith relieved starter Peyton Esslinger with one out and bases loaded in the third. Smith held the Hornets scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fifth, Kyler Lauga singled and Shaun Anderson walked to start the inning. Chad Stockstill followed with blast over the left centerfield wall to pull Picayune to within one run. Picayune send nine batters to the plate, but left the bases loaded.

The Maroon Tide pushed across five runs in the sixth. Lauga doubled to start the frame and Anderson doubled to score Lauga and tie the game. Kade Turnage had an RBI single and Garrett Sauls drove in two runs with a double.

Poplarville scored two unearned runs in the sixth to make it 10-8. Picayune answered with four runs in the top of the seventh using two walks, a Hornet error, a Stockstill double, a Turnage single, and a sacrifice fly from Sauls.

Elisha Hickman pitched the last inning for Picayune.
