Felon arrested after call from citizen
Picayune Police were dispatched to the area of Monroe and East Canal Street on
March 18th at 10:34am, in reference to a call stating there was a man with a gun. Dispatch advised the patrol officer that the subject was wearing a blue jean jacket with a gray hoodie over his head according to the caller.
The patrol officer went to area and while patrolling on East Canal, observed a male subject, later identified as Langston Jones, age 28, of 915 Betsy Drive, Picayune, matching the description of the subject, at the corner of South Monroe and East Canal Street.
When Jones observed the patrol unit slowing to stop, he walked behind a red pickup truck that was parked in the grass. As Jones went behind the truck, the patrol officer noticed that Jones put his hands down around his waistline and dropped something on the ground. The patrol officer exited his vehicle, drew his firearm, and ordered Jones to put his hands in the air and lay on the ground, and Jones complied with the request from the officer.
The patrol officer conducted a search of Jones, but did not find anything on him. The patrol officer went to the area where he had observed Jones to have dropped something and located a Glock 9mm handgun loaded with 9 rounds of full metal jacket bullets, a clear plastic bag with a white rock-like substance believed to be crack cocaine, and a glass jar that contained a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.
Jones was taken into custody, and through a search of NCIC database, it was learned that Jones was a convicted felon. Jones was charged with two (2) counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance While in Possession of a Firearm and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon. Jones was transported to the Criminal Justice Center, booked, and incarcerated.
Assistant Chief Magri was pleased for the second time in a week where the public made a difference.
“Once again, the public helped us out by making a call when they observed something that was not right and that information allowed us to get these drugs and a gun off the street,” Magri stated.
