Hattiesburg sweeps Picayune in basketball

Picayune--Hattiesburg swept both games against Picayune in the region openers for both teams at Kelly Wise Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday night by winning the girls’ game 52-24 and the boys’ game 53-37.

In the girls’ game, Hattiesburg built a 28-10 halftime lead and coasted to the win. The Tigers (11-5,1-0) were led by Chelsea Ulmer with 11 points and Malyia Grayson added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Picayune (8-9,0-1) got 9 points from Allanna Smith and Kylah Walker added 5 points.

In the boy’s game, Hattiesburg scored on a 3 pointer by Jonathan Nash at the end of the first period to take a 13-12 lead and then scored the first nine points of the second period in building a 29-16 lead. The Tigers (11-5, 1-0) built a 21 point lead after the third period and cruised to a 53-37 victory.

Matais Pruitt led Hattiesburg with 17 points and Darryl Jordan added 11 points. Marvun Arnold had 17 points for Picayune (13-5,0-1).

Picayune will play at Pearl River Central on Friday.
