Local resident receives high recognition

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Hunter S. Hespen has been named Naval Base Kitsap Junior Sailor of the Year for 2017.

Hespen is the son of Judy and Steve K. Hespen of Carriere.

He is a 2010 graduate of Pope John Paul II Catholic High School, Slidell, La. He earned a bachelor's degree in 2014 from Mississippi State University

Selection was based on the individual's exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, teamwork ethic, personal achievements and record of supporting and serving the community.

Hespen is currently serving as a Field Training Officer with Security Department, Naval Base Kitsap Bangor, Wash. He has served in the military for 2 years.
