Traffic safety checkpoints yield narcotic arrest

Picayune Police were performing a traffic safety checkpoint on October 18th at the corner of Moody Street and 8th Avenue that resulted in a narcotic arrest according to Picayune Police Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri.
At around 10:00am, officers came in contact with a gold 1999 Ford pickup truck as it pulled up to the checkpoint. The driver, identified as Da-Keith Burton, age 23, of 2212 Bruce Street, Picayune, told officers he did not have valid insurance. Burton was instructed to pull over to the side of the road.
While speaking with Burton, officers could smell a strong odor that appeared to be burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle. Officers asked Burton to exit the vehicle. After speaking with Burton, officers searched the vehicle and found a ‘roach’ type cigarette believed to marijuana in the ash tray. During a further search of the truck revealed 36 hand rolled cigars containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, a glass mason jar containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, a metal grinder containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, and a black digital scale containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.
