Picayune Police Narcotic Detectives used their noses to lead them to the arrest of two Picayune residents who evidently decided it was ok to sit in a parking lot and smoke marijuana with no concern for law enforcement.
On September 26th at around 6:19pm, Picayune Police Narcotic Detectives were patrolling in the area of North Buren Avenue and Fourth Street with their windows rolled down, when they smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from an area where five suspects were gathered around a black Nissan Maxima and a silver Ford Crown parked in an open lot.
Detectives recognized two of the suspects, identified as Kenneth Terrell Stephens, age 24, of 315 North Monroe Avenue, Picayune; and Daramie Dajuan Magee, age 21, of 402 Fifth Street, Picayune. The other suspects observed were two unidentified males and one unidentified female.
Detectives approached the suspects and saw a clear mason jar containing a green leafy substance, believed to be marijuana, and a black digital scale in the back seat of the Nissan Maxima. Through further investigation, Detectives learned that the jar and the scale belonged to Magee. Magee was taken into custody.
While speaking with Stephens, Detectives observed a green and white Newport cigarette pack on the front passenger seat of the Nissan. Upon opening the cigarette pack, the Detectives located a plastic baggie containing an off-white, rock like substance believed to be crack cocaine. Upon further investigation, it was learned that the crack cocaine belonged to Stephens. Stephens was taken into custody.
Magee was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute within 1500 feet of a school or church (felony). Stephens was arrested for Possession of Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute within 1500 feet of a school or church (felony). Both were transported to the Criminal Justice Center where they were booked and incarcerated on the stated charges.
The other suspects at the scene were released.
