Proactive Patrolling leads to three drug related arrests

Joshua Joe Broom

Desiree Rachel Kennedy

Kent Leroy Smith

On August 24th at around 1:42pm, Picayune Police Narcotic Detectives were proactively patrolling westbound on Jackson Landing Road when they noticed a silver Chevy Silverado pickup truck traveling westbound with a busted windshield. Detectives activated blue lights on the pickup truck in order to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle was pulled over on South Beech Street near Jackson Landing Road.

As the pickup truck was pulling over, the Narcotic Detectives noticed that the driver of the truck handed the passenger a clear bag. Detectives approached the vehicle and came in contact with the suspects identified as the driver was Joshua Joe Broom, age 44, of 201 Airport Road, Picayune; the passenger who was handed the bag as Desiree Rachel Kennedy, age 27, of 165 Shorty Burgess Road, Picayune; and a third passenger in the pickup truck identified as Kent Leroy Smith, age 35, of 162 Bluebird Lane, Picayune.

Detectives searched the vehicle and found a glass pipe containing a white burnt residue that was located underneath the front seat of the pickup truck. This type of glass pipe is commonly used to inhale crystal methamphetamine.

Detectives learned from dispatch that Broom did not possess a valid drivers license, and through further investigation, the detectives learned that Broom did not have valid insurance either. During a search of the suspects, two clear plastic bags containing a crystal like substance believed to be crystal methamphetamine, was recovered from Kennedy. After further discussion with the suspects, Narcotic Detectives learned that the narcotics found during the search were being transported to be sold.

Broom was placed under arrest for Conspiracy to Sell a Controlled Substance within 1500 feet of a church, Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute within 1500 feet of a church, Transfer of a Controlled Substance within 1500 feet of a church, Possession of Paraphernalia, No Driver’s License, No Insurance, and Improper Equipment related to the busted windshield on the pickup truck. Kennedy was placed under arrest for Conspiracy to Sell a Controlled Substance within 1500 feet of a church, and Possession of a Controlled Substance (felony). Smith was placed under arrest for Conspiracy to Sell a Controlled Substance (felony) within 1500 feet of a church.

All three suspects were transported to the Criminal Justice Center and booked on the charges they were arrested for as noted above.
