The City of Bay St Louis finally has a compliant floodplain ordinance in place after months of going back and forth with FEMA and MEMA. After hearing from Mississippi Emergency Management Agency Executive Director Lee Smithson on Thursday, the Bay St. Louis City Council voted unanimously to adopt the compliant floodplain ordinance, which includes the removal of Article 5, Section A, Number 17 which previously contained language allowing the use of fill dirt which was forbidden by current FEMA regulations.

By adopting and approving the ordinance, Bay St Louis avoided the possible loss of 2,226 flood insurance policies and $463 million dollars of flood insurance coverage.
