City of Picayune garbage rates to increase--updated

Michael Williams- WRJW News

During last night's meeting of the Picayune City Council, City Clerk Sid Albritton asked council to update the garbage collection fee ordinance. Currently citizens of the city pay $13.25 for garbage pick-up through Coastal Environmental Services.

Recently Coastal submitted a revised bid to continue servicing the city and even though they were awarded the lowest and best bid, garbage service fees will increase from $20.85 to $26.45 per household.

For commercial customers, the new rate will be $28.15 up from the current rate of $26.45

Increases in fuel costs and a rise in the consumer price index drove the increase in fees that had to be passed to consumers. The city did absorb part of these increases to keep the jump in price manageable to citizens. If the consumer price index should decrease next year, those savings could be passed along to city residents.

The council voted unanimously yes to approve the updated the ordinance.
