Pearl River concludes ’19 season with sophomore celebration against Delta
POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River will honor its 18-member sophomore class on Thursday when it concludes its 2019 campaign against Mississippi Delta.
Kickoff at historic Dobie Holden Stadium is 6 p.m.
The game will be streamed at PRCCAthletics.com and
PRCCMedia.com/gold with David Sutton calling the action.
The game will also be carried on WRJW 1320 AM in Picayune, WCJU 1450 AM in Columbia, WCJU 104.9 FM in Prentiss and both WHSY 950 AM and WHSY 105.9 FM in Hattiesburg. Carey Meitzler will provide the play-by-play with Barry Harper adding color commentary and Jacob Hickman delivering insight from the sideline.
In addition to Thursday being Sophomore Night, it’s also a Pink-Out game. General admission is free.
PRCC’s 34-12-2 all-time record against the Trojans was boosted last year when Delta native Will Lang (Inverness; Indianola Academy) nailed a 29-yard field goal in overtime.

PEARL RIVER
Terrence Humphrey (Clarksdale) leads PRCC’s passing attack. The redshirt freshman has completed 45.6 percent of his passes for 818 yards and five scores. Jaylan Wilson (Bay St. Louis; Bay) has been PRCC’s go-to receiver this season, hauling in 24 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns.
Latreal Jones (Taylorsville) isn’t far behind Wilson with 12 receptions for 224 yards and one score.
Lance Stewart (Oxford; Lafayette County) has been PRCC’s leading rusher, collecting 366 yards and a TD on 88 carries.
The Wildcat defense boasts the reigning MACJC Defensive Player of the Week in Noah Mitchell (Leakesville; Greene County). Mitchell made 23 tackles in PRCC’s 25-3 loss at No. 1 Gulf Coast last week and leads the Wildcats with 80 tackles on the season. Mitchell’s 11.4 tackles-per-game are tops in the MACJC and third in the nation. Kobe Cole (Flora; Madison Central), Darrell Sims Jr. (Bassfield; Jefferson Davis) and Ricco Moore (Moss Point; St. Martin) round out PRCC’s leading tacklers with 55, 51 and 46 stops respectively. Sims also leads PRCC with five sacks and nine tackles for loss. Nijewel Coleman (Sumrall) leads the Wildcats with two interceptions.
Pearl River has also received a boost this year from dynamic special teamer Gayden Hence (Hattiesburg). Hence averages 39.8 yards per punt, which is 10th nationally. His 2,268 yards on 57 punts rank second in the nation. Hence has also made 4 of 7 field goals and 7 of 10 PATs for 19 points. Two weeks ago Hence was the Homecoming hero as he converted an extra point, kick — and recovered — an onside kick and converted the game-winning field goal with 35 seconds remaining to up-end visiting Southwest 17-16. Hence was named the MACJC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts.
Prior to kickoff, PRCC will honor its sophomore class, which includes Wilson, Juan Nelson (Laurel), Darrell Luter Jr. (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove), T.J. Wash (Forest; Scott Central), Cole, Sims, Ron Baker (Prentiss; Jefferson Davis), Zeke Chapman (Lake), Caleb Rozar (Clarksville, Tenn.; Dickson County), Sirvares Snow (Newton), Radonte Womack (Prentiss; Jefferson Davis), Jabari Coston (Independence, La.; Loranger), Jaeden Ridgeway (Pascagoula), Antuan McDowell (Starkville), Delshun Bradwell (Sawdust, Fla.; Godby), Corbin Lewis (Jayess; Lawrence County), Stetson Moore (Philadelphia) and Terrance Monroe (Petal).
SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI DELTA
Delta enters Thursday’s finale with a 3-5 overall record, boasting wins over Coahoma, Northeast and most recently a 45-42 victory over Holmes.
MDCC is averaging 312.3 yards per game on offense and surrendering 438 yards defensively. While they’re scoring 19.3 ppg, they’re giving up 33.1.
The Trojans have used two different quarterbacks this season. Jordan Gilleylen has completed 58.4 percent of his passes for 842 yards and five touchdowns, while Byron Walker has completed 54.2 percent of his throws for 833 yards and eight TDs. The two have combined for just three interceptions despite attempting 245 passes.
Four different receivers have caught at least 10 passes. Lebarron Jones leads the Trojans with 52 receptions for 767 yards and six TDs. Treveon Miles has caught 31 passes for 302 yards and two scores.
Patrick Jackson leads MDCC’s rushing efforts with 782 yards and three touchdowns on 155 carries.
George Jackson leads MDCC’s defensive efforts with 52 tackles and three interceptions. LaDarrius Glover has a team-high six sacks.
