PRCC offering new program: Accounting Technology

HATTIESBURG - Pearl River Community College’s Forrest County Center is now offering a new Accounting Technology degree.

Accounting Technology is a new career-technical program that falls under the Business Technology Department umbrella, according to Debbie Ferrill, Department Chair for the Business Technology Department.

“We reached out to area businesses to inquire about the need for these graduates,” said Ferrill. “Businesses such as CPA firms and other companies with accounting departments, accounts payable and receivable departments, etc. stated they would benefit from hiring our Accounting Technology graduates.”

PRCC’s program will be a 2-year Associate of Applied Science degree.

“Based on the 2011 Mississippi Census Report, 54 percent of Mississippi jobs now require training and education beyond high school,” said Ferrill.

“As a result, the primary goal of this new program will be to meet the career and personal educational needs of all adult learners while increasing the present-day workforce within our state.

“This program evolved from potential students contacting our department and expressing an interest in an Accounting degree. Even though the college currently offers a 2-year Associate of Applied Science degree in Business Management Technology, this new Accounting Technology program will provide more specific training in the accounting field.”

This Accounting Technology program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in accounting, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and inventory as well as enhance the skills of persons currently employed in accounting who wish to advance.

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be prepared for accounting positions in business and industry, governmental agencies, and public accounting firms.

One advantage of this program is that it is structured to enable students to successfully achieve their educational and career goals while maintaining their commitment to job and family.

The Accounting Technology program, as well as the other CTE Business Technology programs offered at PRCC, is flexible offering face-to-face classes and/or online classes.

Courses are also offered in a 4-, 8-, and/or 15-week format. Students may take up to 21 hours per semester.

Federal Student Financial Aid is available at PRCC to those students who apply and qualify. If you were previously enrolled in a MS community college and are a MS resident 21 years or older, did not complete the program, and have been out of school for at least 24 consecutive months, you may also qualify to return to school under a new program entitled “Complete-2-Compete.”

This program can also provide additional funding to those students who qualify. Potential students may obtain more information on this C2C program by contacting Angela Ryals on the Forrest County campus of PRCC.

For information about the Accounting Technology program or any other business technology program, contact Ferrill at 601-554-5512 or email dferrill@prcc.edu.

Businesses who would be interested in hiring graduates or providing internships for current students, are asked to contact Ferrill. New courses begin Jan. 8, 2020.
