Picayune overcomes slow start and beats East Central 35-14

Hurley—Picayune overcame a slow start at East Central, but the Maroon Tide made the necessary adjustments that produced a 35-14 win at Shirley Field.

After a scoreless first quarter, East Central scored first on a 1 yard run by Will Young with 5:12 left in the half.

Down 7-0 to the Hornets, Cameron Thomas raced 66 yards for a touchdown with 4:24 left before half. Austin Samples kicked the first of his five extra points to tie the game.

Picayune got the ball back again after forcing a Hornet punt to the Maroon Tide 24 with 2:36 left. Five plays later Thomas (pictured) scored from 8 yards out with :30 left and Samples’ point after made it 14-7.

The Maroon Tide got the ball to start the third quarter and Thomas scored his third touchdown with a 27 scamper with 10:34 on the clock it was 21-7 after the Samples’ extra point.

After holding East Central on fourth down at the Maroon Tide 24, Picayune went 76 yards in 4 plays with Samples scooting in from 3 yards out with 3:41 left in the third.

Picayune scored its last touchdown on a 24 pass from Jakail Myers to Nick Doane with 1:12 left in the game.

East Central (3-2, 0-1) finished the scoring when Teshun McGee busted loose for a 64 yard run with :26 left.

Thomas finished with 239 yards on 15 carries to pace the Maroon Tide (5-0, 1-0). Picayune had 283 yards on 28 carries. Myers completed 3 of 5 for 91 yards.

After three weeks on the road, Picayune hosts Gautier on Friday at Lee-Triplett Stadium.
