Pearl River looks to get back on track at East Central


POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River’s football squad will look to get back in the win column Thursday with a road trip to MACJC South Division foe East Central.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at Bailey Stadium in Decatur.

The game will be livestreamed at PRCCAthletics.com and PRCCMedia.com with Kelly Sanner and David Sutton calling the action. The contest will also be broadcast on WRJW 1320 AM, WCJU 1450 AM in Columbia, WCJU 104.9 FM in Prentiss, and both WHSY 950 AM and WHSY 105.9 FM in Hattiesburg. Carey Meitzler is on the call alongside color analyst Barry Harper and sideline reporter Jacob Hickman.

ABOUT PRCC

The Wildcats (1-2 overall, 0-1 South Division) enter Thursday’s contest looking to bounce back after falling to No. 11 Copiah-Lincoln 32-9 in their home opener.

It was PRCC’s special teams that stood out from the game as the Wildcats blocked a field goal and Sirvares Snow (Newton) returned it 79 yards for a touchdown. PRCC also recorded a safety, jumping on Co-Lin’s kicker after the defense held strong and forced the Wolves to punt from their own end zone.

Freshman quarterback Terrence Humphrey (Clarksdale) has completed 48.1 percent of his passes for 499 yards and four touchdowns. He has also scored one rushing touchdown.

Humphrey has spread the ball around through three games as six receivers have caught at least four passes. Jaylan Wilson (Bay St. Louis; Bay) leads PRCC’s receivers with 11 receptions. He also has 113 yards receiving with a touchdown. Latreal Jones (Taylorsville) has caught eight passes for a team-high 148 yards and a touchdown. Khalil Levy (Ocean Springs) is PRCC’s third receiver to eclipse the century mark with 129 yards on six receptions.

Freshman running back Lance Stewart (Oxford; Lafayette County) has been the workhorse on the ground for the Wildcats. Stewart has rushed 42 times for 197 yards and a touchdown.

Darrell Sims Jr. (Bassfield; Jefferson Davis), Noah Mitchell (Leakesville; Greene County) and Kobe Cole (Madison; Madison Central) have been tackle machines for PRCC’s defensive unit, leading the Wildcats with 28, 24 and 22 total tackles respectively. The Wildcats have recorded nine sacks and 16 tackles-for-loss through three games.

Gayden Hence (Hattiesburg) has been strong on special teams for PRCC, averaging more than 40 yards per punt and making 1 of 2 field goal attempts and 5 of 6 PATs.

ABOUT ECCC

The Warriors (2-1, 1-0) enter Thursday’s game riding a two-game winning streak. ECCC fell to Northwest 26-13 in its opener but beat Itawamba 34-14 and Southwest 19-0 in successive weeks.

The Warriors are averaging 304.7 yards per game while allowing 280.7.

Quarterback Holman Edwards has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns with an interception. Ten different Warriors have caught passes, with Jaylen Zachery and Depodray Coburn serving as go-to targets. Zachery leads ECCC with 11 receptions for 61 yards, while Coburn has caught 10 passes for a team-high 126 yards. No other receiver has more than 46 yards receiving on the year.

Two ECCC running backs have eclipsed 200-yards, led by J.D. Martin, who has rushed for 306 yards and two scores on 45 carries. Marq Qualls has rushed for 206 yards and two scores on 52 carries.

Elijah Keyes leads ECCC with 21 total tackles.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Pearl River leads the all-time series against ECCC, 53-22-4. The Warriors held on to win last year’s meeting in Poplarville, 24-21. The Wildcats won the 2017 contest in Decatur 59-40.
