Pearl River women set season high in goals in rout of Southwest

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — Pearl River coach Henrik Madsen said he wanted to see more finishing ability from his Wildcats.

They apparently heard him loud and clear. In the last two games, Pearl River’s women’s soccer team has scored 14 goals. On the heels of a 5-0 victory at Gulf Coast last week, the Wildcats routed visiting Southwest 9-1 on Tuesday at the PRCC Sports Complex.

“They definitely came through tonight with some goals,” Madsen said. “It was good to score off of some things we’ve been working on in practice like corners and set pieces.”

SCORING SUMMARY

Briana Carr (Laurel; West Jones) opened the game’s scoring with two quick goals in the first 14 minutes. Carr’s opener eight minutes in followed a free kick. While the Bears cleared the initial kick, Peyton Rounsaville (Leakesville; Greene County) dug the ball out and sent Carr in on goal. The forward tucked it under the goalkeeper for the game’s first goal.

Six minutes later, Carr scored similarly, taking a bending Victoria Stewart (Pearl River, La.) pass in on goal and one touching it under the Southwest keeper for a 2-0 advantage.

Shelby Harrington (Oak Grove) got into the scoring mid-way through the first half, netting two goals of her own. The sophomore’s first was a dandy, as she danced around a defender on the right side and lifted it just under the cross bar in the 25th minute. Two minutes later she scored again, crashing the back door to tap in a perfectly placed cross from Cela Neldon (Oak Grove).

SECOND HALF SCORING

The Wildcats’ (4-0-1 overall) scoring trend continued in the second half as Maddie Beets (Long Beach) netted two goals within 60 seconds of one another. The first came courtesy of a give-and-go with Carr where Beets went five hole on the keeper. Beets “called her own number” on the 6-0 strike, booting a ball just under the cross bar from the edge of the box.

Laura Magleau (Belo Horizonte) extended PRCC’s lead to 7-0 in the 68th minute, blasting a one-touch pass from Zigi Ahortor (Accra, Ghana) past the Southwest keeper.

Seven minutes later Tylee McCann (Leakesville; Greene County) joined in on the scoring, finding the net off of a corner from Magleau.

Jade Shaw (Carriere; Pearl River Central) rounded out the scoring efforts, heading home a free kick from Magleau in the final minute.

“What I enjoyed was the fact we had so many score. Three different girls had two goals,” Madsen said. “That’s a big positive for us so the other team can’t just try and shutdown one scorer.”

Southwest broke PRCC’s shutout streak with five minutes remaining.
