Pearl River hires former Wildcat to lead cheer squad


POPLARVILLE, Miss.— Pearl River has found its new head cheer coach in Sarah Smith of Carriere, the school announced.

Smith brings a solid mix of creativity and experience to the Pearl River cheer squad.

She holds over 10 years of choreography experience with cheer and dance teams throughout Mississippi.

"Coaching cheer has been an unwavering passion in my life and to be given the opportunity to work with such great athletes at a place like Pearl River Community College is truly a blessing," Smith said. "I am looking forward to building a strong cheerleading program rooted in pride, respect, class and commitment."

Smith is a graduate of Pearl River Central High School. She attended PRCC for two years, cheering for one. She then attended the University of Southern Mississippi earning a Bachelor's degree in English before earning her Master's degree in Secondary Educations at William Carey University. She most recently coached at Poplarville High School for six years.

Her and her husband, Nathan, have three children, Noah, Saylor and Knight.

"Sarah is a former cheerleader here and has been involved in the local high school cheer scene," PRCC Athletics Director Jeff Long said. "We are glad she is joining us to lead and mentor our cheer program."
