Wildcats remain undefeated after road trip to Delgado

NEW ORLEANS — No. 17 Pearl River earned its 10th win of the season by defeating Delgado 90-80 Tuesday night, but the win did not come easy.

Head men's basketball coach Chris Oney was quick to point out that despite their record, Delgado has played hard and improved their play in their past four games.

"We have watched Delgado their past few games and they have been right there. They just haven't been able to get over the hump yet," Oney said.

The Wildcats (10-0) scored often but to Delgado's (2-12) credit they matched PRCC's offense and went into halftime only down 48-42.

The Wildcats continued to utilize their high-powered offense in the second half to take a 90-80 victory.

Oney was pleased to see his offense continue to play at a high level, especially against a zone defense.

"It was very refreshing to see us go out and score 90 points against a team that played zone defense for 40 minutes," Oney said. "We got the ball in areas that were giving them trouble and that was good to see, especially coming off the break."

Brandon Rachel (Natchitoches, La.; Natchitoches-Central) and Kelvin Allen (Olive Branch) were key to the Wildcats' success.

Jonas James (Jackson; Murrah) continued to spread the ball around tonight with a team high six assists

Both guards scored 27 points and Rachal secured 11 rebounds to earn a double-double on the night.

"It was Brandon and Kelvin's turn tonight. That is the luxury we have with having a deep team," Oney said. "Those two guys took on that scoring role for us tonight and maybe next game it will be someone else. We just have a lot of guys who are capable of stepping up and helping us win games."

Next up for the Wildcats will be another road trip to East Central to take on the Warriors, Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. The Game will be broadcast on WRJW 1320 AM and WRJWRadio.com with Carey Meitzler on the call and will also be live streamed at eccc.edu/eccc-media.
