Picayune beats PRC 58-7; will host Natchez in playoffs

Carriere---Picayune got off to a fast start and beat Pearl River Central 58-7 before a capacity crowd at Kenneth L. Hendrix Stadium in Carriere.

 

The Maroon Tide scored on the opening possession of the game on a six play 56 yard drive with Jortin Raine scoring from 3 yards out.  Issac Brice kicked the first of his six extra point attempts to make it 7-0 with 9:53 left in the quarter.

 

After holding PRC to a three and out, Picayune started at their own 30 and covered the 70 yards in 11 plays with Jairice Travis plunging in from 1 yard out to make it 14-0 with :57 left in the quarter. Picayune went for two after PRC jumped offside on the extra point attempt and converted with Raine slashing in to make it 15-0.

 

After taking over on downs at the Blue Devil 38, Kaleb Hart scored on a 13 yard run with 9:23 left in the second quarter to push the lead to 22-7.

The Blue Devils got the scoreboard on the possession after the Picayune kickoff putting together a six play 74 yard drive.  Kobe Whitehead scored on a 1 yard run and Sam Lambert kicked the extra point make 22-7 with 6:16 left before half.

Picayune would score three more times in the first half.  Winston Drain scored on a 10 yard run, Raine got his 13th touchdown of the season on a 34 yard scamper, and Jakail Myers and Kyler Lauga hooked up on a 76 yard touchdown pass to build a 43-7 halftime lead.

 

Raine scored on a 35 yard run in the third quarter and Drain added a 13 yard run to close out the scoring.

 

Raine finished with 205 yards on 22 carries for Picayune.  Whitehead tallied 98 yards for the Blue Devils (4-7).

 

Picayune (8-3) will host Natchez in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs on Friday at Lee-Triplett Stadium with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

 

In other South State Class 5A playoff action set for Friday, Laurel will host Wayne County, Hattiesburg will host Brookhaven, and West Jones hosts Stone.
