PRCC women cruise past Southwest

POPLARVILE — Division play is well underway in MACJC soccer and the Pearl River Lady Wildcats are playing their best ball of the season.

The Lady Wildcats got off to a hot start against the Southwest Lady Bears, scoring five goals in the first six minutes of the contest.

Zigi Ahortor (Accra, Ghana) got things rolling for PRCC when she scored in the second minute, one-timing a Sashine Smith (Kingston, Jamaica) corner.

Her goal was followed up by back to back goals from standout Rena Gordon (Clarendon, Jamaica).

Skylar Spears (Clarkdale) got in on the action shortly after, scoring her first goal of the night in the 5th minute.

What followed was a disastrous mistake by the Lady Bears as they scored an own goal a minute later off a Spears cross through the goal mouth.

The Lady Wildcats wouldn’t extend their lead until the 63rd minute of the match when Gordon completed her hat trick to push the PRCC lead to 6-0.

Spears added to the lead in the 72nd minute, making it 7-0.

Gordon capped the offensive outburst with her fourth goal in the 90th minute.

“I thought the first seven minutes we did something we have not done all year and scored some goals when we had chances,” PRCC coach Jack Byrd said. “We didn’t rely on Rena to score all of our goals. Obviously she scored a few but I felt like Skylar made a couple good plays and defensively we played great in the first half and only allowed one shot attempt.”

Gordon credited her coaching staff for her impressive performance.

“I just followed our gameplan and we came out and executed,” Gordon said.

Abbi Thexton wasn’t busy very often but ended up making two saves to earn the victory.

The win puts the Lady Wildcats at 4-4 on the year while knocking the Lady Bears’ record to 0-6.

The Lady Wildcats will face off against Holmes Community College on Sept. 25 in Poplarville at 5 p.m.
