Wildcats fall in South Division opener

WESSON — Pearl River never found its groove Thursday in the Wildcats’ 49-0 loss at Copiah-Lincoln’s H.L. Stone Stadium.

The defense had its moments against the Wolves. Late in the first half Damian Gray (Clarksdale) picked off Wolfpack quarterback Hayden Davis for his first pick of the season.

Early in the fourth quarter Josh Booker-Brown (Houston, Texas; Westfield) and Darrell Luter (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove) broke through Co-Lin’s protection to block a 45-yard field goal attempt early in the fourth quarter. Kentrell McCray (Wiggins; Stone) jumped on the loose ball and the Wildcats (0-3, 0-1) proceeded to mount one of their most productive drives of the night.

Led by reserve quarterback Tavis Williams (Gulfport; Harrison Central), the Wildcats started at their own 40 and proceeded to piece together a 16-play, 58-yard drive. PRCC came up just short of breaking the shutout, however, when Juan Nelson caught a Williams pass and was shoved out of bounds 2 yards shy of the goal line as the final buzzer sounded.

Cooper Callis (Jackson, Mo.; Jackson) led PRCC on the night with 63 yards passing on 9 of 16 passing. Williams completed 2 of 6 passes for 13 yards. He also rushed five times for a team-high 47 yards.

Ron Thompson (Bassfield) and Jesse Pernell (Poplarville) rounded out PRCC’s leading rushers with 31 and 22 yards respectively.

Thomson led PRCC with 19 receiving yards on two catches. Juan Nelson (Laurel) and Tyler Polk (St. Martin) each caught two passes for 18 yards.

Co-Lin rotated through Davis and Connor Mire at quarterback. Davis connected with Kundarrius Taylor for a 4-yard touchdown to open the scoring. After a 33-yard run by Rico Owens, Davis found DeMartre Collins for a 10-yard strike to take a 21-0 lead into the first break.

Mire made the most of his opportunity, connecting with Taylor for a 24-yard touchdown. Mire later connected with Antoine Robinson for a 36-yard touchdown. Davis finished up the scoring with a 34-yard pass to Malik Heath and a 24-yard strike to Robinson.

Davis led all quarterbacks with 155 yards passing on 13 of 14 passing. Mire completed 7 of 11 for 102 yards. Owens led Co-Lin with 80 yards rushing. Robinson had a game-high 71 yards receiving on four catches.

The Wildcats are back at home Thursday, hosting East Central at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed at PRCCAthletics.com and can also be heard on WRJW 1320-AM in Pearl River County and WCJU 104.9-FM in Columbia.
