City Council approves numerous requests

During Tuesday’s meeting of the Picayune City Council, the council approved numerous requests.

The council unanimously approved a request from Coast Electric for the use of any unsold or vacant lots in the Industrial Park directly south of the Southeastern Fresh property to use as a parking lot during a storm.

The council approved a request to accept a donation of American and Mississippi state flags from Woodmen Life to be used in various departments in the City. Councilman Larry Breland asked for a roll call vote and Breland, along with councilperson Lynn Bumpers, voted against accepting the flags. The request was passed by a 4-2 vote.

Christy Goss, Director of Retirement and Grants Administration, requested the city accept an award for the MDEQ Solid Waste Assistance Grant to hold a Household Hazardous Waste Day in Picayune. Goss said the grant was for up to $25,000.00 and the city’s matching part would not exceed $6,000.00.

Fire Department Chief Keith Brown explained that the goal of this program is to allow residents to bring household hazardous items like oil based paint, batteries, used oil, old tires, and other hazardous household items that cannot be thrown into normal garbage. Goss added that the city would likely contract with an outside company to set this up on a Saturday.

Goss said the city will provide a notice to residents of what is accepted for this collection, the date of the collection, and the location. She said that the location would probably at the city barn.
