PRC School Bond Referendum is good for students

Editorial Opinion

On Tuesday, May 8th (tomorrow), Pearl River County School District residents will vote on a proposed bond referendum that will give voters the opportunity to make a statement about their commitment to provide a better and safer learning environment for the students of the school district.

This referendum will allow for the construction of classrooms on the Middle/High School Campus, additional classrooms on the Elementary Campus and renovations at both locations. Other needs addressed will be parking, drainage, and ADA (American Disabilities Act) improvements on both campuses. The Pearl River County School District’s Capital Improvement Plan reflects the changes that will address the future growth of the school district which cannot be ignored or disputed by anyone who has look at the information the plan is based upon.

At the Carriere campus, the proposed plan calls for 13 additional classrooms, allowing for 390 additional students, while at the McNeill campus, the proposal calls for 8 additional classrooms, allowing for 200 additional students. All classrooms will be moved to brick buildings for the safety of the students.

In regards to tax increases, if your home is worth $100,000.00, then your taxes will increase just $78.00 per year. If you are 65 or older, the tax is even less due to the homestead exemption you are currently allowed on your home.

The Pearl River County School District ranks 140th out of 147 school districts in the state of Mississippi in per student spending, while achieving a "B" School District rating.

The Pearl River County Schools per pupil expenditures are below the state average and the lowest in Pearl River County. Picayune spends $11,469.24 , Poplarville $10,298.16 while the per pupil expenditure for PRC schools is $8,307.31.

This bond referendum is focused on needs, not wants, and sets the school district up for a very positive and rewarding educational experience for the students.

If you have not made up your mind, please review the information available via this link PRC School Bond Referendum. . Read the facts, and not someone's opinion on Facebook that may not be factual.

Voting will be at only one location; The Storm Shelter 315 (PRC Safe Room) on the Carriere campus located at 7431 Highway 11, Building A, Carriere, from 7:00am until 7:00pm.

We encourage everyone in the district to get out and vote.

We support this bond referendum with an affirmative YES!
