School Board hears good news from Picayune Career and Technology Center
The Picayune School Board met last night to discuss matters ranging from contracts to awards to personnel and a very positive update on the Picayune Career and Technology Center (PCTC).
The board opened the meeting by receiving three bids to provide waste services for the upcoming school year from Waste Pro, Waste Management, and Boudin Waste. The board voted to renew their contract with Boudin Waste, which was the lowest bidder by $14,472 annually.
Picayune Career and Technology Center Director Ms. Joaun Lee gave an encouraging update on awards and programs at the center. The Automotive program earned national recognition and certification through NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation), which improves the training in the program, allows them to accept donations, and now allows for immediate recruitment and hiring of our high school students.

Mr. Leo Raverty is the Automotive Instructor and the driving force behind fulfilling all the requirements to make this award and certification possible. The program also received a $24,000 grant from the Lower Pearl River Valley Foundation to buy the necessary equipment. Mr. Raverty and company completed a 2-day evaluation by a panel and passed on all counts.
Notably for the PCTC, Pearl River Community College is now offering full scholarships to all high school students who complete a 2 year program with a 90-100 GPA and half scholarships to students with a 80-89 GPA. This scholarship is good for any major.
Also related to Pearl River Community College, the board approved a dual enrollment agreement with PRCC for High School Seniors.
The board approved two measures dealing with the calendar. The first measure approved next year’s school calendar, which Assistant Superintendent Brent Harrell stated, “is set up just like last year’s.” The second measure approved a clause that allows the district to avoid having to make up bad weather days if the Mississippi Governor declares a state of emergency.
After approving repairs to roof and floors of the Picayune Junior High gym, the board approved the hiring of some teaching personnel, including new assistant football coach Ty Trahan.
Picayune School Board will meet again on May 8th at 5:30pm.
