Three takeaways from the Picayune City Council Meeting

At last night’s meeting of the Picayune City Council, actions were taken on individual pay increases and pay scale adjustments, declaration of three properties as public nuisances, and approval of a new roof and HVAC system for the Picayune Police Criminal Justice Center. Council members Larry Breland and Lyn Bogan Bumpers continued their absence from council meetings.
The Council approved pay raises & pay scale adjustments
City Clerk Amber Hinton put a request before the council to approve the individual pay raises that were part of the two mill tax increase approved by the council on September 15th to fund salary adjustments in an attempt to make Picayune more competitive in the job marketplace. This action also required the council to adjust the City’s pay scales to be aligned range in classification chart with the corresponding pay scales. The Council approved both requests.

2. Code Enforcement
The council held an open hearing to consider taking action on 10 properties on a list provided to the council Code Enforcement Officer Tom Milar. Milar told the board that he had received good response from 7 of the 10 property owners. For the remaining three properties, Milar requested and the council approved to declare the three properties as public nuisances. The properties are at 120 Gray Ave and two separate vacant lots in the 800 block of Jarrell Street. No one showed up to represent those properties.

3. Police Department Roof Replacement and HVAC Replacement Project
Public Works Director Eric Morris filled in for the City Engineer and requested approval of a quote for the replacement of the roof at the Picayune Police Department’s Criminal Justice Center. The scope of work will include replacement of the roof as well as a new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC). The council approved the lowest and best bid of $232,200.00 from E. Cornell Malone Corporation of Hattiesburg.
