On August 28th, just after midnight, Picayune Police officers responded to a call concerning a domestic disturbance in the 2400 block of Laura Drive. Upon arrival at the address, officers observed a black Nissan Sentra pulling out of the driveway and attempting to flee the scene according to Assistant Chief Jeremy Magri.
Officers positioned their patrol car behind the Nissan and conducted a traffic stop at Hickman Avenue near Charlotte Drive. The officers made contact with the Nissan’s driver and the passenger, identified as Kelton Jones, age 24, of 806 4th Street, Picayune.
While speaking with the driver and Jones, officers smelled the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. A second officer arrived on the scene and while he was speaking with Jones, the other officer observed Jones making several furtive movements in apparent attempt to try to hide something.
Magri said officers asked Jones and the driver to step out of the vehicle. A search of the vehicle ensued and during the search, one of the officers walked to the front of the vehicle and shined their flashlight through the windshield of the vehicle and noticed a clear plastic bag protruding from the headliner on the passenger side where Jones had been sitting. The officer then reached into the headliner near the windshield and retrieved a clear plastic baggie containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. The officer found another clear plastic baggie shoved into the headliner and it contained five dosage units of a pill believed to be Xanax.
Magri said that Jones was placed under arrest and was transported to the Criminal Justice Center where he was booked for Two Counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and incarcerated.
