Supervisors receive update on next county wide paving project and bid openings

Pearl River County Engineer Les Dungan discussed putting together a bid package for a county wide paving project with the Board of Supervisors during last Wednesday’s meeting similar to the one undertaken last year.

Dungan said the next bid package would include approximately 12.11 miles of paving and includes proposed work on five roads: 3.06 miles on Homer Ladner, 3.33 miles on Savannah Millard, 2.31 miles on Ceasar, 1.5 miles on Burgetown, and almost 2 miles on Liberty Road. Dungan estimated the cost at $1.5 million for the project and he reiterated that as this time it is strictly an estimate as he is in the process of going to each of the roads to see what base work each may need.

Dungan (pictured standing) said he spoke with County Road Manager Charlie Scheilder for input on the roads and also used costs for work done in the past. Dungan said the estimated cost comes out to around $125,000 per mile. He said last year the cost was around $75,000 per mile for the approximately 13 miles paved last year under a similar project approach.

Dungan said the cost for the work to start on May 6, 2019, on F.Z. Goss Road came in around $150,000 per mile. Dungan said a lot of factors determine the variance in costs including the thickness of the overlay and other factors related to base work required. Once bids are received Dungan said work could begin as early as June of this year. Dungan said the way he has the project planned, the board can review the bids on a road by road basis and can decide individually on each road based on the amount of the bid and funds available. The bids will be released as soon as Dungan completes his planning and design work and the bids will be opened on May 22, 2019.

Dungan said the bids for the bridge replacement for Lakeside Drive in Anchor Lake and two bridges on Progress Road will be opened on April 30, 2019. The bid to replace the two tank car culverts that were installed a year ago on McNeill-Steephollow Road with a permanent bridge is set for May 21, 2019.
