Pearl River women add two big-time post players

POPLARVILLE – Pearl River’s women’s basketball team recently picked up two big wins away from the court with the signings of Moss Point’s Brieanna Miller and Oak Grove’s Alesha Temple, coach Scotty Fletcher announced Monday.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with these two. I want to give Coach (Chelsee) Black credit for the relationship she formed with those families and young women. It will be an honor and privilege to coach them daily. We know they had many choices, so for them to choose Pearl River means a lot to us,” Fletcher said. “They complement one another really well. They’re two elite post players for the in-state recruiting class. I think they will do really great things for Pearl River women’s basketball.

“I definitely think we got two steals.”

BRIEANNA MILLER

The 6-foot Miller has been a big-time player for the Lady Tigers over the last two seasons. As a junior, Miller averaged 11.6 points per game with 6.6 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 3.8 steals.

Through seven games this season, Miller is averaging 14.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 3.1 steals. She’s also fresh off of a huge performance where she recently scored 29 points and pulled in 13 rebounds.

“We’re extremely excited to welcome Brieanna to the family,” Fletcher said. “She’s someone we identified two years ago and have continued to see her grow. We feel like she has a lot of potential.”

Fletcher said Miller reminds him a lot of former Lady Wildcat standout Tyasia Willis.

“She has a really high motor, can play inside and out, rebounds well out of her area and has the ability to score both under the basket and on the perimeter,” Fletcher said. “She has the chance to be a very good player for us.”

ALESHA TEMPLE

Temple’s pedigree is among the many reasons Fletcher is excited to have signed the Oak Grove forward.

“She comes from a wonderful family. Her mother went to school down here and her dad was a great basketball player at East Mississippi and Shorter,” Fletcher said. “She comes from a basketball family.”

The 6-foot-1 Temple was injured during the summer and will miss her senior season as a result. She was a huge part of Oak Grove’s 23-win team a year ago, however, averaging 11.3 points and 6.7 rebounds with six double-doubles, according to her MaxPreps.com profile.

“If she was healthy, I don’t know that we would have had a chance to coach her – she’s that good. She has a lot of potential,” Fletcher said. “She’s going to be a matchup nightmare inside for the opposition. She has a high motor, can score the ball inside and out and is an elite shot blocker.

“She’s just a complete basketball player with a high ceiling.”
