SENIOR CITIZENS AND THEIR FAMILIES are eagerly awaiting the 2010 Senior Citizen’s Fair and Expo, an annual event in the Picayune area, attended by thousands of area seniors and their families each year. The 2010 fair is set for Saturday, June 5th, at the Picayune High School gymnasium. The doors open to the public at 8am. The fair and expo is open until 1pm, and is stocked full of interesting booths offering free health screenings, samples, and helpful information especially for today’s active senior citizen. www.wrjwradio.com -click on Senior Fair for pictures and past participants.

The first 1000 seniors through the door will receive a free goodie bag stuffed with interesting items, gifts, goodies, flyers, discount coupons, product and service information, and other items. Each year fair attendees line up for over a city block to be one of the first through the door to get a goodie bag. Then, they take these bags from booth to booth to collect other goodies, information, and discounts from businesses who are participating.

There are dozens more who have called to indicate they want to be part of the fair, and have requested more information and applications. By all indications, the 2010 Senior Citizen’s Fair and Expo will be another big success. Any business, health care provider, organization, government office, or civic club interested in participating in the 2010 fair should contact WRJW radio station manager Delores Wood for more information. wrjwradio@bellsouth.net

In addition to the products and services on display, there will be many free health screenings, including sight and hearing screenings, BMI screenings, blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, spinal screenings, and more. These free health screenings are a big help to the seniors who attend helping them screen for any possible health problems.

There is also a concession stand staffed by Coach Kristie Mitchell and her girls softball team and parents. This group joins WRJW Radio in Picayune to host the Senior Fair each year. In addition to the concessions, Coach Kristie and her girls help set up the pipe and drape and fair display area, stuff the goodie bags, and then help the vendors carry in their booth materials. They also help with the cleanup after the fair. For their three days of work, the team shares in the proceeds of the fair.

Live entertainment and hundreds of door prizes are another big part of the day. The door prizes are given by participating businesses, and other area businesses, including nice gifts from WRJW/Swapshop. This year the doorprizes include a family vacation to Florida or Nashville, a nice recliner, a microwave, a television, huge gift baskets, and others. McDonald’s Funeral Home and Insurance plans to give away three $100 cash prizes throughout the day. Other businesses give gift cards to nice restaurants, gift certificates, plants, and much, much more. More than 125 door prizes were given away last year valued at over $7500!

Seniors are also given an official fair directory program book, listing all participating vendors with their contact information. These can be used after the fair to contact vendors with services seniors may need or want.

This is the 14th year the Senior Citizen’s Fair and Expo has been staged in Picayune, and each year the event gets bigger and draws more attention. Many local and state government services and programs have already registered to be part of the fair. They come with a treasure trove of information for those who attend.
